The first Denver Veterans Day 5K was successfully completed in 2009, lead by ROTC Cadre. There were approximately 220 participants, and the race was deemed a huge success.
The 2010 DVD5K was led under cadre supervision by Cadet Garrett Hothan, a third year Cadet and student at the University of Colorado Denver. The race size jumped to over 300 participants in its second year. The 2011 DVD5K was led by Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Cadet Rob Bingham. The 2011 race showed a strong increase in public awareness and even Congressman Ed Perlmutter of Colorado 7th District showed up to participate.
The Cadet Community Leadership Association exists to support the future officers of the Army ROTC Program at Metro State University. It pays to send Cadets to participate in the Memorial Bataan Death March, Bolder Boulder, and other competitive events in the country.
Captain Russell B. Rippetoe was killed in Iraq on April 3rd, 2003 by a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment.
He was an alumni of the Army ROTC Program at Metro State, and in honor of his memory the Russell B. Rippetoe Foundation was created. Each year, the Russell B. Rippetoe Foundation awards the Rippetoe Saber Award and Scholarship to an outstanding senior army cadet, who has performed admirably throughout the four years of his officer training.
